The story of Sgt. John Basilone's life is legendary within the Marine Corps and to people who have a historical interest in World War II.  His story is a classical American tale of a fun-loving but somewhat aimless youth, from a loving Italian family of 10 children in Raritan, NJ, who grew up to become the model of a hero.

SGT. BASILONE WAS THE ONLY ENLISTED MARINE IN WW 2 TO RECEIVE THE MEDAL OF HONOR, THE NAVY CROSS, AND THE PURPLE HEART

The Basilone Foundation is seeking DONATIONS to:

(2) to assist in bringing the life story of Sgt. Basilone's deeds

to the American Public and preserving this heroically important part of American history. 

                                    BREAKING NEWS:

     Sgt. John Basilone was one of three main Marine characters depicted in HBO's  ten part mini series  released in 2010. "THE PACIFIC" produced by Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks, is a companion piece to "Band of Brothers" 

     Jerry Cutter, a Basilone nephew & Director of the Basilone Foundation, co-authored the only book on Sgt. Basilone's life, " I'm Staying with My Boys ", followed by a  Documentary film " Basilone ", in 2006. Both of these tell the story of Basilone's early life, up to his death in 1945 on Iwo Jima.

     Diane Hawkins, a Basilone niece & also a Director of the Basilone Foundation, will produce a new Documentary film in cooperation with the Basilone Foundation.  "John Basilone: The Legacy Of A Hero ", will focus on the present day effects of Sgt. Basilone's heroic deeds, both within today's Marine Corps and outside the Marine Corps.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR  to Sergeant John Basilone United States Marine Corps

Citation:       
For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in the Lunga Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on October 24th and 25th, 1942.  While the enemy was hammering at the Marines' defensive positions, Sergeant  Basilone, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sergeant. Basilone's sections, with its gun crews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on.  Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived.  A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sergeant Basilone, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment.  His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

---The Foundation distributes WEEKLY, FREE books, or DVD's, on Sgt. Basilone's life, to the HONOR graduates from BOOT camps at Parris Island, SC and San Diego, CA.  Over 1,000 gifts are made per year! This program is entering its third year. (this program has been discontinued)

---The Emergency Assistance and Family Well Being Program helps military families from all our armed forces cope with unexpected financial hardships. This program is specific to the need required.

---During 2010, donations were made by the Foundation to The Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society, Homes For Our troops, and Hope Haven of The Low Country (helping military family victims of violence), and NEADS (provides canines for wounded vets) Also, funding was provided for the next documentary film on Basilone being made by Diane Hawkins.

---In August, 2009, The Emergency Assistance and Family Well Being Program assisted an active-duty Marine's family to attend the Marine's homecoming return from Afganistan.

---In September, 2009, The Emergency Assistance and Family Well Being Program assisted an active Army soldier's wife in purchasing and installing vehicle hand controls break to allow her to drive once he is deployed in November. 

---An OLDIES concert was held to benefit the INJURED MARINES SUPPORT UNITS at Camp Lejeune, NC and Camp Pendleton, CA. (contributions made 2006).

Background information on the military career of
Sgt. John Basilone

Prior to WW II, John joined the US Army and became known as "Manila John" because of his undefeated boxing record.  After discharge from the Army he enlisted in the Marines in 1940.

At Guadalcanal, he was ordered to hold back 3,000 Japanese troops attempting to capture Henderson airfield.  With only 15 men (12 subsequently killed) he held the line for 72 battle-filled hours - firing machine guns, fixing machine guns, and crawling through Japanese lines to obtain ammunition. A full Japanese regiment had been almost wiped out.

He was awarded the  Congressional Medal of Honor  and then ordered to return home for bond tours. However, John demanded to be returned with his men in the Pacific.  In the early invasion hours of Iwo Jima, after destroying a Japanese gun emplacement, he was killed on the beach.  He was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his bravery
